Health and Child Care Minister Hon. Dr Douglas Mombeshora is leading Zimbabwe’s delegation at the 26th International AIDS Conference (IAC), taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 26 to 31 July 2026.

The global gathering brings together scientists, policymakers, healthcare professionals, community leaders and development partners to share advances in HIV prevention, treatment, care and research.

Zimbabwe’s participation reinforces its commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, while providing an opportunity to showcase national progress, exchange knowledge and strengthen international partnerships.

The country’s HIV response has also received international recognition, with National Advocate Tendayi Westerhof honoured with the prestigious Ruth Cardoso Movement Building Award during the IAC 2026 FIERCE Award for her contribution to women-led advocacy for the rights of women and girls living with HIV.

The award celebrates women living with HIV who demonstrate the qualities of being Fighters, Intelligent, Empowered, Resilient and Courageous, while recognising their efforts to challenge stigma, transform communities and advance the global HIV response.

Westerhof dedicated the honour to women living with HIV in Zimbabwe and around the world, highlighting their resilience in confronting persistent challenges.

She also acknowledged the support of the Government of Zimbabwe and the National AIDS Council (NAC), where she serves on the board representing people living with HIV.

NAC Chief Executive Officer Dr Bernard Madzima congratulated Westerhof, describing the recognition as a proud moment for Zimbabwe and a testament to the impact of community leadership in the national HIV response.

As Zimbabwe engages with global partners in Rio, Westerhof’s recognition provides another powerful reminder of the importance of placing communities, and particularly women living with HIV, at the heart of the country’s journey towards ending AIDS.
