In a significant boost to Botswana’s healthcare sector, President Duma Boko and Indian President Droupadi Murmu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Pharmacopeial Cooperation, paving the way for easier access to quality and affordable medicines from India.

The MoU, signed during President Murmu’s historic state visit to Botswana on 11 November, marks a major milestone in the countries’ diplomatic relations as the two nations celebrate nearly 60 years of friendship.

According to President Boko, who confirmed the development on his social media platforms, the agreement will address longstanding challenges in Botswana’s health sector by improving access to essential medicines.

“This development will address a longstanding challenge in the health sector,” President Boko said, expressing gratitude for India’s continued collaboration with Botswana.

He further announced that India has offered to donate anti-retroviral (ARV) medication to Botswana, with the consignment expected to arrive soon.

President Murmu highlighted the strengthening ties between the two countries, noting that cooperation continues to grow across health, education, trade, agriculture, and technology.

“The discussions between the two leaders covered various areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment, agriculture, health, education, skills development, defence, and digital technology,” she said. (Source: BTV)

The visit included a ceremonial welcome, bilateral talks, and an address to Botswana’s Parliament. President Murmu also toured the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) for a briefing on the diamond sector — a critical pillar of trade between the two countries.

India remains one of Botswana’s largest diamond buyers, with trade reaching US$436 million in 2024. The two nations maintain regular Foreign Office Consultations and Joint Ministerial Committee meetings, supported by more than a dozen MoUs in areas such as visas, culture, and commerce.

President Murmu’s visit to Botswana forms part of her two-nation African tour, underscoring India’s growing engagement with the continent.
