The African modeling world has been left devastated by the passing of international model Zwelethu Tekete, the reigning Mister Africa Continent. The sad announcement was made by Mister Tshwane Regions, where Tekete once held a crown.

The South African-born model, remembered as the longest-reigning Mister Africa Continent, passed away at just 25 years old. He made history in 2021 when he became the first-ever model to be crowned Mister Africa Continental, a title he held with pride until his untimely death.

Tekete had earlier been crowned Mister Tshwane Regions 2020, with the organizers paying heartfelt tribute to their “irreplaceable king whose hard work would always be remembered.” In their official statement, they wrote:

“In loving memory of Zwelethu Quinton Tekete, it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own, our former title holder, Zwelethu Quinton Tekete — Mr. Tshwane Regions 2020 and Mr. Africa Continent. As part of the Mr. and Miss Tshwane Regions family, Zweli carried the crown with pride, grace, and a true spirit of leadership. He was not only a remarkable title holder but also a kind soul whose presence lit up every room he walked into.”

They continued:

“Zweli’s journey with us was more than just about a title; it was about the impact he made, the friendships he built, and the inspiration he left behind. His passion, humility, humor, and warmth will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In moments like these, we are reminded that a crown may be passed on, but the legacy of a title holder lives forever in the hearts of the family they leave behind. Once a title holder, always part of the family.”

In addition to his Mister Africa Continent and Mister Tshwane crowns, Tekete was also a top finalist in Mister Supranational South Africa 2023, where he championed his advocacy for children living with disabilities.

Tributes have poured in from across the continent. Mogale T Mogale of Botswana, the Mister Africa Continent 2nd runner-up in 2021, penned an emotional tribute:

“It’s painful. The year 2021 gave me a brother through pageantry. We were both eyeing the Mister Africa Continent crown. Our bond just started when we were both preparing for the competition in Ghana. South Africa and Botswana were paired, and we became roommates. Ghana became more exciting. Everything was normal; we felt at home. He was a jolly person, fun to be around, full of jokes. But one thing I know and can attest is that he was a man of his words, mission, and a visionary leader.”

He concluded:

“Now that the will of God has surfaced, I am indebted to continue the legacy that we built, ensuring it strengthens the bond between Botswana and South Africa. To the Tekete family, my warmest condolences. My bro, rest in peace. We can’t question the will of God… Till we meet again.”
