Harare, Zimbabwe – The grand hall of the Dominican Convent School buzzed with youthful energy as Tsitsi Masiyiwa, Co-Founder and Chair of Higherlife Foundation, returned to her alma mater. For Masiyiwa, this was no ordinary visit—it was a deeply personal journey back to where her dreams began, as part of her reflections ahead of her 60th birthday.

As she stepped into the hall, memories of 1978 flooded back. At just 12 years old, Masiyiwa was a fresh-faced boarder transitioning from Chishawasha Primary School. Coming from Mabvuku and still refining her language skills, she felt far from the typical student profile. Yet, that chapter laid the foundation for the visionary leader, philanthropist, and entrepreneur she is today.

This visit was deeply emotional,” she shared. “I stood in a space that represented my beginnings, surrounded by three generations: my former biology teacher and headmistress, Sr. Gundula; myself, bridging the past and present; and the bright young women who symbolize the future.” Among them were students from the Star Leadership Academy, a Higherlife Foundation program dedicated to nurturing high achievers through leadership development.

Speaking to the students, Masiyiwa emphasized the pivotal roles that teaching, mentoring, and coaching played in shaping her purpose. Each aspect uniquely influenced her personal and professional growth.

  • Teaching gave her the knowledge to understand the world.
  • Mentorship offered guidance through shared experiences.
  • Coaching empowered her to solve problems independently, fostering self-reliance.

These three elements created a support system that I continue to rely on,” Masiyiwa explained. “Today, they guide me as I coach others to realize their potential.

Masiyiwa encouraged the students to reflect on a question that has anchored her journey: “Who am I?” She highlighted the importance of nurturing the spirit, soul, and body—an approach grounded in biblical principles that has served as her compass through life’s challenges.

We were deeply honored to host our former student, Mrs. Tsitsi Masiyiwa, Co-founder and Co-Chair of the Higher Life Foundation. She was welcomed by Sr. Kudzai Mutsure O.P., the current Headmistress, along with her former Biology teacher and Headmistress from the 1970s, Sr. Gundula O.P.” read a statement by Dominican Convent High School.

During her visit, Mrs Masiyiwa inspired the young ladies to cultivate a strong sense of self-worth, embrace their identity, and strive to make a difference in society. Our school is home to some beneficiaries of her philanthropic efforts. We are grateful for her generous donation of Science equipment to support our students.”

She also urged the students to consider “Why?”—a question that fosters introspection and alignment with one’s purpose. “This self-reflection helps transform obstacles into opportunities and ensures our actions align with our long-term goals,” she said.

Masiyiwa shared her journey of striving for balance across spiritual growth, financial planning, intellectual development, health, career, and family life. She reflected on overcoming insecurities and societal pressures, emphasizing the importance of self-confidence and embracing one’s uniqueness.

Balancing life’s aspects isn’t easy,” she admitted. “But it’s essential for personal fulfillment and making meaningful contributions to the world.”

The visit concluded with a communal prayer and the school anthem, a poignant moment filled with hope and determination.

As Masiyiwa departed the hall, she left behind a legacy of inspiration. The eager faces of the students mirrored the determination she once carried, ready to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery.

For Masiyiwa, it was a full-circle moment—a chance to honor her past, celebrate her present, and inspire the future. “We all have the power to navigate life’s challenges with purpose and grace,” she reflected. “And in doing so, we can change the world.
