The Hunhu Council of Fashion revealed it’s new board members on the 24th of March.
The council is a subsidiary of Zimbabwe Fashion Week Trust.

Part of the new board members include Rumbidzai Chirumbwana who is reinstated for the second time as part of the board members of the Hunhu Council of Fashion. She is appointed as the Head of Retail and Sustainability of the Hunhu Council of Fashion Board.

In an exclusive chat with My Afrika Magazine, she shared her enthusiasm to be re-confirmed as part of the Hunhu Fashion Council board. Rumbidzai further said she is passionate about contributing in Zimbabwe’s fashion sector and driving sustainable fashion practice, eco-conscious initiatives and ethical production.

“I am honoured to take on this role for a second consecutive year and contribute to what I deem, a vibrant Zimbabwean fashion industry! As Head of Retail and Sustainablity on the Hunhu Council of Fashion board, my focus is to drive sustainable fashion practices, promote eco-conscious initiatives as well as support ethical production. Collaborating with some of the industry’s brightest minds, I look forward to encouraging innovation and strengthening Zimbabwe’s retail landscape.” she said

Rumbidzai further added that, Hunhu Council of Fashion is set to play a crucial role when it comes to the growth of economy of Zimbabwe and the fashion sector.

“The creative economy presents a significant opportunity for economic growth in Zimbabwe, with the potential to rival or even surpass traditional sectors like mining. Hunhu Council of Fashion is uniquely positioned to harness the country’s rich cultural heritage and transform it into a thriving, globally recognised fashion industry,” she said.

When asked to define Africa’s fashion sector, Rumbidzai said the continent’s fashion industry in Africa is growing, although greater improvements are needed especially in Zimbabwe.

“Africa’s fashion industry is rapidly gaining global recognition as a sought after hub for authentic design, exceptional craftsmanship and luxury. However, Zimbabwe’s fashion sector remains in a developmental phase, hindered by economic challenges and a fragmented industry structure. Despite these obstacles, the potential for growth is undeniable. With the right investment in retail infrastructure, commitment to sustainable practices and market access, Zimbabwe can position itself as a key player in Africa’s flourishing fashion landscape,” she said.

Other appointed board members include Walter Chipambwa appointed as Head of Education whilst Nico Abote was assigned as the Head of Public Relations and Media advocacy.

The Chairperson of the Hunhu Council of Fashion, Priscilla Chigariro explained in a press statement that the council is made up of three structure which include: Education, retail and Sustainablity, Media and advocacy.

Chigariro informed that their main vision as the board of Hunhu Council of Fashion is to support and elevate the fashion industry in Zimbabwe.

“Together we are committed to fostering a fashion ecosystem that not only celebrates Zimbabwean craftsmanship but also ensures its longevity through sustainable and ethical practices,” she said.
