Kampala, Uganda – 20 July, 2024 – Zimbabwe’s Sables secured a nail-biting 22-20 victory over hosts Uganda, progressing to the semi-finals of the Rugby Africa Cup at the Nelson Mandela International Stadium in Kampala.
This hard-fought win sets Zimbabwe up for a clash against arch-rivals Namibia on July 24.
The Sables dominated the first half with tries from Edward Sigauke, Takudzwa Musingwini, and Takudzwa Mashawi, establishing a solid 22-point lead by halftime. However, Uganda mounted a fierce comeback in the second half, scoring 20 points and turning the match into a thrilling contest.
Zimbabwean captain Hilton Mudariki expressed his satisfaction with the victory, stating, “It is great to get this win; it takes us a step further, and we know what we have to fix in the next match.”
Head Coach Pieter Benade echoed Mudariki’s sentiments, acknowledging Uganda’s skill and physicality while emphasizing the different challenges Namibia will pose. “Namibia’s game will be a lot different. Credits to the Ugandans for their very skilled and physical approach, but against Namibia, it will be a game of set pieces and discipline,” Benade remarked.
The Sables received a standing ovation from a crowd of Zimbabwean fans in the grandstands, celebrating their team’s resilient performance.
