A few days ago, Zimbabweans were on cloud nine celebrating the historic achievement of the young lady Chervons. Yesterday, Zimbabweans were ecstatic as the young male Chervons secured the All Africa Games title, bringing home the country’s third gold medal from the event held in Ghana. Zimbabwe has become the first nation in Africa to win double gold medals for the sport since its introduction at the 13th edition of the games this year, with victories for both male and female teams.
Zimbabwe’s U25 men’s Chevron team dominated the game, losing no matches from the start. To clinch the gold medal, Zimbabwe had to face their long-time rivals, Namibia, whom they defeated by 8 wickets. Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Zimbabwe showcased an impressive bowling performance that limited Namibia to 113/7 in 20 overs.
Zimbabwe Cricket has announced a reward of US$80,000 for Zimbabwe’s emerging men’s side that claimed the gold medal at the 13th African Games in Accra on Saturday. Expressing his delight, ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani congratulated the team and highlighted their extraordinary performance. The reward will be shared among the team members, including coaching and support staff.
“The performances and results at the African Games have been exceptional, and we couldn’t be prouder of the way our young men’s and women’s teams represented our country,” said Mukuhlani. He emphasized the significance of investing in the game, expressing confidence in the bright future of Zimbabwean cricket.
The women’s team also received a similar reward for their historic achievement at the African Games, where they won the first-ever gold medal in cricket. Upon their return, the Zimbabwe Women were warmly welcomed by Zimbabwe Cricket officials and members of the Zimbabwe Cricket Supporters Union at the airport.
