Johannesburg, South Africa: In a significant announcement today, U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben E. Brigety II, informed the Government of South Africa of his decision to resign from his position, effective January 10, 2025. This move aligns with the standard procedure during a change of presidential administration in the United States.

Ambassador Brigety expressed his deep honour in serving as the U.S. Ambassador and fostering the strong relationship between the United States and South Africa. Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted the remarkable progress made in various sectors, emphasizing the shared commitment to democratic principles and mutual interests.

During his tenure, Ambassador Brigety played a pivotal role in enhancing trade relations between the two nations. Through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), South African businesses gained greater access to the U.S. market, fostering investments in the automotive, minerals, chemicals, agricultural products, and transportation sectors. These initiatives have significantly contributed to South Africa’s economic development, supporting over 267,000 jobs.

The collaboration in global health has been particularly impactful. Joint investments through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief have made significant strides in combating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. These efforts have improved the health and well-being of millions of South Africans and strengthened the country’s healthcare systems. Additionally, the partnership addressed the COVID-19 pandemic and enhanced vaccine manufacturing capabilities, improving health security and equity.

Ambassador Brigety also underscored the importance of cultural exchanges and educational opportunities. Partnerships with over 120 universities and colleges have been strengthened, with over R54 million funded in joint research, academic exchange, and curriculum development. The initiatives have also focused on renewable energy job readiness and student-driven entrepreneurship, providing youth with greater access to employment opportunities and pathways to job creation.

A flagship initiative launched by the U.S. Mission in March 2024, Atlanta Phambili, has forged stronger ties between the United States and South Africa. Leveraging the institutions, civil rights legacy, creative industries, and economic dynamism of Atlanta and South Africa, this partnership has facilitated meaningful collaboration and two-way exchange. Highlights include a sister airport agreement between Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and Airports Company South Africa, and a series of people-to-people connections established during a roadshow in Atlanta and an upcoming reciprocal visit hosted by South Africa.

The announcement marks the end of significant chapter on US -South Africa relations with Ambassador Reuben E. Brigetys contributions.
