Victoria Falls is Zimbabwe’s tourism capital, known for its iconic seventh wonder, the mighty Victoria Falls, famously called ‘The Smoke that Thunders‘ or ‘Mosi Oa Tunya.’
This city, which attracts more tourists than any other in Zimbabwe, is also the hometown of one of the country’s most extraordinary fashion designers, Brightman Dlamini. He is the founder of the fashion brand Tocar, established in 2021.
In his own words, Brightman Dlamini describes his brand Tocar as one that expresses natural stories through its products, such as garments and accessories, using fashion to tell Zimbabwe’s story to the world.
“Our vision statement is ‘Wear your pride,’” said Dlamini. “And our mission statement is simply ‘Narrate.’ Instead of trying to change the narrative, just tell the story the best way you can.” For Brightman, the brand is a tribute to his late mother, who was also a fashion designer and passed away in Matabeleland North, the province to which he has now relocated his brand.
In an interview with My Africa Magazine, Brightman explained that the expansion of his brand from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls was influenced by several factors, including his interest in culture and the memory of his beloved mother.
“It was always in my plans, within our business strategy, to narrate Zimbabwean stories. Zimbabwe is rich in cultural diversity. I wanted to export my garments and story to anyone who comes to Zimbabwe, and Victoria Falls has more exposure to tourists.”
“In Victoria Falls, we wanted to learn about the local culture. The language spoken by the Tonga and Nambya people made me even more interested in their traditions,” said Dlamini. He dismissed claims that he had abandoned his clients in Bulawayo, the City of Kings and Queens, explaining that his move to Victoria Falls was an expansion of the brand, and he continues to serve his clients from Bulawayo.
Speaking about his clientele, Brightman confirmed that Tocar is the brand behind dressing the award-winning model and reigning Mister Africa International Zimbabwe delegate, Future Nyoni. He mentioned that they have been working together for a long time, and Dlamini is well aware of Nyoni’s fashion tastes. “He knows what to wear, and I have worked with him for a long time. I know what he likes and does not like. Sometimes he wears things he does not necessarily like, but they hold meaning for him,” explained Dlamini.
Dlamini described Nyoni as hardworking, dedicated, and selfless, expressing his full support for him to become the next Mister Africa International in 2024.
When asked about the design he created for King Future to wear at Mister Africa International in Sierra Leone, Dlamini remained tight-lipped but shared hints about the inspiration behind the designs. “I do not usually give out hints, but as he represents Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, and Africa, he will embody the essence of our heritage. It is all about royalty, nature, and earth. Expect to see the diversity of a Zimbabwean King and royalty,” said Dlamini.
Dlamini emphasized that Tocar is a brand for anyone who believes in its mission and goals. He also expressed gratitude to the designers who mentored and collaborated with him when he was discovering his path in the fashion industry. Brightman shared his appreciation for the support he has received from both local and international clients of Tocar.
