Its not often that from such an age comes a gripping and thought provoking novel that raises important questions about morality, accountability and the consequences of ones actions. I have recently had the pleasure of reading “THE STUDENT BODY”, the second novel from the pen of Phakemenkosi Princess, a nineteen year old high school student and crime writer from Bulawayo.
Born of a well received WhatsApp Channel story, ‘THE STUDENT BODY’ is an engaging twist filled thriller filled with complex and multi-dimensional characters. It chronicles the lives of a group of students embroiled in a murder cover-up. Delving into themes of guilt, misplaced loyalties, manipulation and the blurred lines between right and wrong, it is guaranteed to keep you the reader on the edge of your seat as the plot unfolds.
Kept hooked from the very first page, Phakemenkosi’s writing is suspenseful as I was kept guessing from page one to the very last. And not only was I guessing through out its entirety, I was left thinking long and hard long after I was done about the depths of deception, manipulation and control.
Dark, ‘THE STUDENT BODY’ sheds light on an appalling reality of exploitation of vulnerable youths, reveals the fragility of trust and the power of manipulation and its long-lasting impact on the victims.
A prequel to ‘TURNING POINT’, I was left reeling and eagerly anticipating the sequel.
A standout thriller, it is a novel I would recommend. Suited for all age demographics, this novel raises important questions on support systems, child protection and accountability.
Rating, four out of five, Thought provoking, impactful and expertly woven. A standout thriller.
