Teymar is a young and vibrant singer from Zimbabwe. She recently released the song ‘Ready’ which is already drawing praise and attention to her budding talent. In the music video she exudes confidence and commands every moment she blazes across the screen. Though recorded her first song in 2021, she only released her first in 2024 after taking the time needed to refine her talent.
Today, she presents herself as an artist who is not only talented but set for great heights. Teymar took the time to talk to us about her music, her inspiration and what else lies in the horizon. My Afrika Magazine reporter, Kudzai Mhangwa (KM) chats with Teymar (TM).
KM: Hello Teymar! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us. I came across your music one afternoon on YouTube and I was hooked. Tell us a bit about Teymar.
TM: My life growing up was quite the experience. Being my mother’s only daughter I was opened up to things like fashion and music at a very young age and that definitely contributed to my desire to be an entertainer.
KM: Was there an early inkling to music when you were younger?
TM: Yes, absolutely. I come from quite a musical family if I do say so myself. My father is a lover of music as he was in a band back in the day while my mom who has a beautiful voice, would encourage me to sing with her at church from a very young age.
KM: When did you make the decision to finally have your music recorded and released?
TM: I recorded my first song in 2021 and released in 2024. It took some time to really perfect my craft, find my sound and mentally prepare myself for the journey of becoming an established artists.
KM: Your song ‘Penga Udzoke’ was released a few months ago. How did you feel when you released the song and music video?
TM: I was so excited to release “Penga Udzoke” because it’s a song that came from a personal experience that I cherish and it also showcases a huge portion of my artistry so I was really excited for the world to meet an extended but personal version of Teymar.
KM: How has the reception been to ‘Penga Udzoke’?
TM: I would like to think people love “Penga Udzoke” judging from the amount of views and streams it has acquired over time. However, I’m looking forward to more people discovering the song as well as me as an artist.
KM: What was the inspiration behind the song?
TM: The song was inspired by a personal experience of heartbreak. The song was basically a dedication to an old love interest expressing my desire for them to come back.
KM: A little over two weeks ago you released ‘Ready’ with a wonderful music video to accompany it. What is ‘Ready’ about?
TM: Yes I did. “Ready” is about finding love after experiencing heartbreak and doing things differently so that it works out better than previous romantic relationships.
KM: Who have inspired and motivated you in the music industry?
TM: Zimbabwe has a lot of talent but I am mostly inspired by the likes of Takura, Kayflow and Voltz JT, these are people whose music I appreciate and would love to work with some day. Internationally, I have always drawn inspiration from the likes of H.E.R, [and] Tyla amongst so many other talented artists.
KM: What more can we expect from you?
TM: Apart from more music and collaborations with various artists, you can definitely expect to see me more in fashion spaces and the world of philanthropy and charity work.
KM: Like any other human being we are never one thing or the other. Who is Teymar behind the music?
TM: Teymar loves sports and board games, I’m also very outdoorsy. I would enjoy anything really as long as I’m surrounded by good company and food, it’s always a good time.
KM: Thank you for being so generous with your time. What would you like to say to our readers?
TM: To everyone reading, I just want to encourage you to chase your dreams despite the odds. And to include God in everything you do because he’s the pioneer of all things good.
