Harare’s Creative Economic Week showcased an inspiring convergence of fashion, art, and sustainability, with standout designers Char Designz and Yet Designs leading the conversation on eco-conscious fashion. Their collections not only captivated audiences but also emphasized the role of sustainable design in shaping the future of fashion.

Char Designz’s latest collection was inspired by the devastating impact of landfills and pollution, demonstrating the power of repurposed materials. Using fabric waste from curtains, the designer crafted wearable pieces that merge sustainability with creativity.

“I usually create conceptual pieces, but making them wearable was a challenge. A shift in mindset and advice from industry leaders helped me balance creativity and functionality,” said Char Designz.

Beyond sustainability, the designer emphasized the importance of preserving Zimbabwean culture through fashion.

“Fashion sparks conversations. It helps people embrace their heritage and feel proud of being Zimbabwean.”

Char Designz is now preparing for “I Wear My Culture 2”, a showcase set for Bulawayo and Harare in August 2025, while also collaborating with Kuda Rice and Paper Pieces on a new project.

Yet Designs presented a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, incorporating dyeing and screen printing into the collection. The challenge? Making high-fashion pieces more wearable.

“The audience response was incredible, and the feedback exceeded my expectations,” said the designer.

Yet Designs highlighted sustainability as a core principle in fashion, urging creatives to understand the true value of their work.

“Never underestimate your work or price it too low just to make sales. Know how much value your art holds.”

With plans for new techniques and international collaborations, Yet Designs is poised to make an impact both locally and beyond.

The Creative Economic Week underscored fashion’s role in cultural preservation and environmental responsibility. With trailblazers like Char Designz and Yet Designs, Zimbabwe’s fashion scene is on an exciting path towards sustainability and innovation.
