SPOTLIGHT: Internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean artist Ryan Koriya is set to make a triumphant return to his roots with the much-anticipated show, “Cup Tea No Sugar,” at Harare’s Reps Theatre on April 4th, 2025.
Following a transformative five-year journey abroad, Koriya is eager to reconnect with his home audience through an unforgettable live performance that merges Blues, Rock, Funk, Soul, and Reggae, anchored by his heart-stirring vocals and impactful storytelling.
Reflecting on his decade-long absence from the stage in Harare, Koriya’s performance marks a significant milestone, not only for himself but for the local music scene. The “Cup Tea No Sugar” project made its debut in Victoria Falls in December 2024 and will celebrate the vibrancy of Zimbabwean talent by featuring local musicians in collaboration with Koriya’s newly formed band.
At the heart of Koriya’s performance lies a profound message about mental wellness and personal empowerment. He described the event as one that transcends mere musical entertainment.
“This show is about more than music. It’s about collective healing, bridging worlds, and reminding people that joy and depth can co-exist,” he explained.
His commitment to mental wellness is evident through his work as a Teetotal Holistic Life Coach. Koriya works with creative individuals, celebrities, and entrepreneurs, helping them overcome trauma, anxiety, and burnout using a blend of science and spirituality. In his recent endeavors in Zimbabwe, he has co-hosted a mental wellness radio series on Breeze FM, addressing critical issues affecting the youth, while facilitating school talks that empower teens with tools for resilience against peer pressure.

Koriya’s artistic roots were established in Harare’s Prince Edward School, where he honed his skills in music by learning the violin and cello. His early accolades in the classical music sphere were complemented by his vibrant participation in theatre through Reps Theatre, where he starred in productions such as “Robin Hood” and “Romeo & Juliet.” His experiences in the local arts scene laid a foundation for his later global music career, which has taken him to over 20 countries across four continents.
Having received accolades as a youth actor, including winning Best Actor in Zimbabwe, Koriya’s return to Reps Theatre for “Cup Tea No Sugar” feels particularly poignant. It signifies not just a comeback but a full-circle moment in a space that inspired his artistic voice and fueled his passion for storytelling. For Koriya, the mission of “Cup Tea No Sugar” extends beyond performance. He is exploring collaborations with the newly launched Friendship Bench Hub in Mount Pleasant, a community-driven mental health initiative that provides a safe space for diverse groups, including youth and women.
Koriya also aims to support this initiative by sharing tools rooted in neuroscience and trauma-informed care, with the goal of normalizing mental health conversations and making support accessible to all.
The “Cup Tea No Sugar” performance will showcase a band comprising talented Zimbabwean musicians, further reinforcing Koriya’s commitment to celebrating local artistry. Joining him on stage are drummer Sam Gulubane, bassist Abundance Mutori, keyboardist Joshua Alufasi, and guitarist Amkela Moyo. Together, they will present a high-energy, groove-rich performance that promises to uplift and inspire audiences of all ages.
The show will feature the live rendition of Koriya’s new single, “When Hope Is Lost,” a reggae anthem that powerfully encapsulates themes of resilience and love amid adversity. The lyrics convey a message of hope and new beginnings, encouraging listeners to find strength through challenging times.
In addition to his music career, Koriya is the founder of ZimXcite, a cultural fashion brand that celebrates Zimbabwean identity through apparel and merchandise. His diverse portfolio combines music, coaching, and entrepreneurship, all aimed at promoting Zimbabwean culture and mental wellness within the diaspora and beyond. As a proud Teetotal artist, Koriya exemplifies a commitment to clean living and high-vibration artistry, making “Cup Tea No Sugar” a true reflection of his values.
