Sunderland, UK – Reinildo Mandava has etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Mozambican national to play in the English Premier League, following his move from Atlético Madrid to Sunderland AFC.

The 31-year-old left-back signed a two-year contract with the English club, marking a significant milestone not only in his career but also for Mozambican football. “It is a dream to play for an historic club like Sunderland FC,” said Mandava, expressing his excitement after sealing the deal.

“I am going to become the first Mozambican player, so this isn’t something that happens every single day.

Sunderland AFC welcomed the star defender on social media, posting: “Welcome to Sunderland AFC, Reinildo Mandava ❤️🇲🇿. Putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light, the left-back moves to Wearside following his departure from Atlético Madrid.”

Mandava’s journey is one of perseverance and global progression. Born in January 1994 in Beira, Mozambique, he made his international debut in 2014 against Morocco and began his European career with Portuguese giants S.L. Benfica a year later. Loan spells at Fafe and Sporting Covilhã provided the groundwork for his eventual rise.

His breakout came during a stint with LOSC Lille in France, where he played a pivotal role in their 2020–21 Ligue 1 title-winning season. His performances earned him a spot in L’Équipe’s Team of the Season, and he followed up by helping Lille lift the French Super Cup in 2021.

In January 2022, Reinildo joined Spanish side Atlético Madrid, where he became a defensive mainstay under Diego Simeone. Over three seasons, he made 74 La Liga appearances, recorded a 90% pass accuracy, and consistently ranked high in defensive metrics. He also featured in multiple UEFA Champions League campaigns before closing his chapter with the club at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Example of submission, courage and heart, overcoming… Thank you very much for these years defending our colors, King! ❤️🤍 We wish you the best in your upcoming challenges 🫶” read a statement by Atlético de Madrid.

Now heading to Wearside, Reinildo brings elite-level experience, renowned discipline, and leadership to a Sunderland side eager to make its mark in England’s top flight. His arrival not only signals Sunderland’s ambitions but also inspires a new generation of Mozambican players dreaming of European football glory.

“I want to help, to give power to my team-mates, and transmit my experience in the dressing room. Above all else, I want to make people happy and I will give everything to make that happen.” said Reinildo
