Gaborone, Botswana – President Duma Gideon Boko has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and improving the well-being of Batswana. Speaking at a media briefing today, he announced major national initiatives, including a forensic audit, a judicial commission of inquiry on BCL and Tati Mines, the expansion of the Bonno Housing Scheme, and a 30% reduction in household water tariffs.

President Boko revealed that a forensic audit firm has been appointed and will commence work immediately to ensure transparency and accountability in key national matters. The audit will be overseen by a Steering Committee composed of: Moses Pelaelo, Tymon Katlholo, Mpaphi Phumaphi, Monty Chiepe, and Aobakwe Monamo.

This initiative aims to enhance governance and ensure responsible management of national resources.

A Presidential Judicial Commission of Inquiry has been established to investigate the closure of BCL and Tati Nickel Mines. The commission will examine the reasons behind the shutdown and its impact on the economy, workers, and communities. This inquiry underscores the government’s dedication to addressing economic challenges and ensuring accountability in the mining sector.

The government has expanded the Bonno Housing Scheme as part of efforts to increase access to affordable housing. Key highlights of the expansion include:

  • 100,000 housing units to be built over the next five years.
  • Inclusion of government officers earning a D4 salary scale and below in the scheme.
  • 3,000 new housing units to be developed at Kgale, Gaborone.

This expansion is aimed at addressing the housing deficit and making homeownership more accessible to low- and middle-income earners.

To ease the cost of living, President Boko announced a 30% reduction in household water tariffs, ensuring that essential services remain affordable for citizens. This move is expected to provide significant relief to households across the country.

Concluding his address, President Boko emphasized that these initiatives are part of his administration’s broader strategy to promote good governance, economic justice, and sustainable national development.
