The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) President, H.E. Chief Fortune Charumbira, has called upon African legislators to prioritize the continental agenda with peace, security, and education as key focus areas. This appeal was made during the official opening of the 3rd Ordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa.

The session, held under the African Union (AU) Theme for 2024: “The Year of Education: Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa,” is set to conclude on July 5, 2024.

We need to prioritize promoting peace, security, and stability,” said H.E. Chief Charumbira during his address to parliamentarians and delegates. “Without peace, there is nothing that can be done on this continent. We need to close ranks as Africans and put our differences aside for a better future for our citizenry. As people’s representatives, it is high time we start contributing to a more prosperous future for the people of Africa by promoting collective self-reliance and economic recovery. Our actions must also focus on facilitating cooperation and development in Africa.”

Palestinian Ambassador to South Africa H.E. Hanan Jarrar, who was given a platform to share her solidarity message, described the dire situation in Gaza. She commended Africa for its historic stance against Israeli actions and noted increased international awareness due to African initiatives. She detailed the latest developments in Gaza and called for the Pan-African Parliament to continue serving as a platform that stands with the voiceless.

The main guest, Arab Parliament leader, President Adel Bin Abdulrahman Alasoomi, emphasized the importance of extensive collaboration between the Arab Parliament and the Pan-African Parliament to advance progress for their people. “We seek extensive collaboration between the Arab Parliament and the Pan-African Parliament to advance progress for our people,” stated Hon. Adel Bin Abdulrahman Alasoomi. He highlighted shared values of freedom, security, and democracy, urging continued support from the Pan-African Parliament on behalf of the Arab League.
