Nigeria celebrated its 64th Independence Anniversary with grand festivities at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his deputy, Senator Kashim Shettima, led the event alongside other dignitaries. The celebration kicked off with a parade in the forecourt of the villa, where President Tinubu inspected the guard of honour, led by Lieutenant Colonel Moshood Yusuf, before observing impressive military drills, a colourful parade, and a presidential change of guards by the Brigade of Guards.

Following the formalities, President Tinubu signed the anniversary register, released white pigeons symbolizing peace, and cut the anniversary cake in a ceremony witnessed by guests. The event also featured a combined armed forces colour patrol, showcasing the national and regimental colours of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, alongside a special silent drill performance by the Guard’s Brigade platoon. Adding to the vibrant atmosphere was a cultural display representing the six geopolitical zones, highlighting Nigeria’s strength in diversity.

In his speech to the nation, President Tinubu reflected on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence, acknowledging the struggles and triumphs. He said, “While we celebrate the progress we have made as a people in the last sixty-four years, we must also recognise some of our missed opportunities and mistakes of the past. If we are to become one of the greatest nations on earth, as God has destined us to be, our mistakes must not be allowed to follow us into the future.” He assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to reforming the nation’s economy, enhancing security, and building a better future for generations to come.

The event, filled with patriotic pride and cultural significance, showcased Nigeria’s resilience and unity as it looks towards a prosperous future.
