South Africa is mourning the untimely death of His Excellency Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, the country’s Ambassador to the French Republic, whose passing was announced with deep sorrow by the government.

President Cyril Ramaphosa described the news as “a moment of deep grief,” adding that Ambassador Mthethwa’s final service in France strengthened bilateral ties and produced benefits for both nations. “May his soul rest in peace,” the President said in his tribute.

Ambassador Mthethwa’s career was defined by decades of public service. He previously held key ministerial positions, including Minister of Police and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture. He also served on the Board of Directors for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee, playing a part in one of South Africa’s proudest moments on the world stage. A longstanding member of the African National Congress, he contributed to its highest decision-making structures.

Appointed to his diplomatic role in December 2023, Ambassador Mthethwa was instrumental in advancing South Africa’s cooperation with France and strengthening ties in the global arena.

Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola paid tribute to him, noting: “I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community.”

French authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death, which has been described as premature and traumatic. The government has extended its deepest condolences to his wife, children, friends, and colleagues.

Ambassador Mthethwa leaves behind a legacy of patriotism, service, and commitment to South Africa’s progress both at home and abroad.
