Harare based musician, Abide Bulawayo (23) popularly known as Acka Bluez drew inspiration from his parents to become a musician.
Acka Bluez is a name that was derived from his surname Bulawayo but to differentiate himself from other family members who are also called Bluez as a nickname, he had to give himself a nickname which is hence Acka Bluez.
“My parents are officers of The Salvation Army which makes me a Pastor’s child. I drew inspiration to be a musician from them as they were recording musicians a long time ago but due to some reasons they had to leave it behind. Their failure to continue is the reason why I am here, to carry the legacy forward as well as use the God given talent.
“My parents job affected and affects me in the sense that they change places from time to time which disturbs my circles such as recording studios, friends within the industry changes and supportive spaces change or even loss of it. It has however been a strength and advantage as well because I have the ability to fit it. I know languages e.g Ndebele which I also use in my music to beautify it,” he said.
For Acka Bluez, life was difficult growing up due to economic hardships and even the changes of workplaces for his parents.
“I have lived in over 10 places which is good but also bad when we were in the worst places you could think of. One time, I stayed with my Aunty and she fall sick for a long time. It was one of the hardest times in my life, adjusting, working, learning and maturing at a young age it was hard and yet a blessing as well. Nothing was handed to nicely though it’s much better.”
“Music has always been a part of me, I was born talented and exposed to the art of it by my parents at a young age not knowing they have made the most beautiful mistake of their lives because there was no way I was going stop,” said Acka Bluez.
Acka Bluez said he faced a lot of challenges as a young and upcoming musician. Faved monetary issues which is major it hindered his progress as an artist, looked down up, not being valued musically by established artists, producers at times and even radio stations.
“I have had so many issues, I couldn’t tell them all but monetary issues being the major issue because you can record, shoot videos as well as promote them with money. I have however worked with a lot of people eg Takue music, dough Major, Munashe and Voltz Jt to mention a few in collaborations and just music work in general. This has been life changing experiences. I’m currently working on a lot of projects which will come out soon and will definitely change my career for the better trust me they are surprises as well.”
