Got Ramogi, Kenya – A historic moment unfolded at the 4th Edition of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival this afternoon, where Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was honored with the title of Luo Elder, marking the third time he has received such recognition, having previously been named an elder among the Alur and Acholi communities.
President Museveni, while addressing attendees at Got Ramogi, the symbolic cradle of the Luo community, reflected on the significance of such cultural gatherings in promoting unity and addressing historical injustices. “After so many years, you are finally highlighting the unfairness of these borders. What right did those individuals have to put asunder what God had united or annihilate entire communities?” Museveni questioned, emphasizing the resilience of African communities in the face of colonial divisions.
He called for a strategic reorganization of African societies, leveraging their shared heritage and brotherhood—or Undugu—to achieve the missions of freedom fighters: liberty, prosperity, and security. “Relying on spears and animal skins is not enough, as the threats we face are more sophisticated. The Undugu (Federation) is the correct approach,” Museveni urged.
Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the spiritual and cultural significance of Got Ramogi. “Got Ramogi epitomizes the deep spiritual roots and traditions that we share as a region. We will keep preserving such heritage to further our unity and drive economic prosperity in East Africa,” Ruto said.
President Ruto was joined by President Museveni, African Union Commission Chairperson candidate Raila Odinga, and a host of governors from Siaya County and beyond. Together, they underscored the importance of cultural preservation as a foundation for strengthening regional unity and economic collaboration.
The Piny Luo Cultural Festival serves as a vibrant platform for celebrating Luo heritage, fostering cross-border unity, and promoting regional cooperation. With leaders like Museveni and Ruto championing integration and mutual respect, the event marked another milestone in East Africa’s journey towards greater solidarity and shared prosperity.
