Zimbabwean rugby stars Brendon Mudzekenyedzi and Dylan Utete have taken a major step in their professional careers, securing spots in the match-day squad for Okman Rugby Club in the Korea Super Rugby League. Their inclusion in a fixture against defending champions Kepcoin in Seoul marks a significant milestone, highlighting the growing recognition of African rugby talent on the global stage.

Mudzekenyedzi is set to make his debut as a winger on Tuesday, March 18th, while Utete will bring his strength to the back row as a replacement. Their selection follows an impressive campaign in the Africa Cup, where Zimbabwe’s dominance caught the attention of international scouts.

Founded in 2023, Okman Rugby Club is quickly rising in the Korean premiership, boasting top South Korean national players like Kim Sang-jin and Yoo Jae-hoon. The addition of Mudzekenyedzi and Utete further strengthens the squad, proving the caliber of players emerging from Zimbabwe’s championship-winning team.

Zimbabwean team manager Takunda Chifokoyo hailed the move as a breakthrough for Zimbabwean rugby, emphasizing the strong ties built during the team’s time in Korea.

“Our hosts were deeply impressed by our players, leading to this exciting opportunity for Brendon and Dylan to join Okman as overseas professionals. Their outstanding performance in the Africa Cup made this possible.”

Chifokoyo further highlighted the broader impact of this achievement:

“2024 was a landmark year for Zimbabwean rugby, and we anticipate more international teams offering our players opportunities in professional leagues. This proves that the Africa Cup champions are among the best in the world.”

As Zimbabwe’s Sables prepare for the World Rugby Qualification stages of the Rugby Africa Cup in Uganda this July, the success of Mudzekenyedzi and Utete serves as inspiration for the team. Their journey underscores Zimbabwe’s growing influence in international rugby and Africa’s increasing presence in elite leagues worldwide.
