Melissa Chuma, hailing from Mafikeng in the North West province (South Africa), has always been driven by a desire to make a significant impact in her community. Growing up with a passion for entertainment, media, and leadership, Melissa knew she wanted to use her talents to inspire and empower those around her.
Her personal motto, “Empowering others, empowering myself,” reflects her belief that uplifting those around her creates a ripple effect of positivity and inspiration. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a lack of family support, Melissa has found strength and encouragement from a supportive online community, who have become like a second family to her.
One of Melissa’s greatest joys is giving back to her community. She offers free modeling classes to children in Matholesville, instilling in them the confidence to pursue their dreams. Her message to them is clear: “Black child, rise and shine! Black child, it can be done!” She wants these children to know they can achieve anything they set their minds to, regardless of the obstacles.
Melissa’s journey to becoming a successful model has been filled with hard work and perseverance. Defying societal standards that deemed her not good enough, thin enough, or beautiful enough, she pushed through doubts and criticism to achieve success. She holds titles such as Miss Capital City SA Brand Ambassador, Miss Passionate Gauteng NW Ambassador, Face of Achievement NW Ambassador, Face of Caz League NW Ambassador, and is a finalist for Miss Callies 2024.
As she prepares for the Miss Callies 2024 competition in November, Melissa is excited to showcase her skills, passion, and dedication. She hopes her story will inspire others to chase their dreams, no matter the obstacles, and to embrace their uniqueness and individuality.
To all those who hear her story, Melissa says: “Black child, rise and shine! Black child, it can be done! Believe in yourself, work hard, and never give up on your dreams. You are capable of achieving greatness, and I am living proof of that.”
