In a landmark move aimed at fostering regional integration and enhancing Africa’s travel economy, Kenya has announced its plans to grant visa exemptions to travelers from most African countries. This decision, approved during President William Ruto’s first Cabinet meeting of 2025 at the State Lodge in Kakamega, signals the country’s commitment to promoting seamless movement across the continent.

The Cabinet decision builds on President Ruto’s vision of a united and prosperous Africa. While most African nationals will enjoy visa-free entry into Kenya for up to two months, citizens of East African Community (EAC) member states will benefit from a six-month stay under existing EAC free movement protocols.

This initiative excludes Somalia and Libya, citing ongoing security concerns, but is a significant stride towards a more connected Africa.

Kenya’s visa-free travel initiative aligns with the broader continental agenda of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which advocates for greater unity and economic collaboration among African nations. By removing travel barriers, the policy is expected to spur tourism, trade, and cultural exchange, further strengthening Kenya’s position as a hub for regional and international travelers.

Tourism players have lauded the move, noting that visa-free policies tend to enhance visitor numbers. The streamlined Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system, now equipped with expedited approval options, will allow travelers to receive permits instantly, with processing times capped at 72 hours. These updates aim to create a seamless and secure travel experience while addressing pre-screening and security measures through an Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record system.

Visa-free travel is anticipated to unlock a myriad of opportunities, particularly for businesses, young professionals, and cultural organizations seeking to connect across African borders. With Kenya already making strides in infrastructure development and its Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, this initiative complements ongoing efforts to position the country as an attractive destination for investment and collaboration.

President Ruto emphasized the importance of regional connectivity in his remarks during the Cabinet meeting. “This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering unity and creating opportunities for all Africans. Travel should never be a barrier to collaboration and growth,” he said.

In addition to approving the visa-free travel framework, the Cabinet meeting also focused on critical reforms in State Corporations and economic initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery and reducing fiscal pressures. The restructuring of State Corporations is expected to address inefficiencies and align government functions with national development goals.

President Ruto highlighted Kenya’s achievements in agriculture, universal health coverage, affordable housing, and infrastructure development as examples of the transformative progress his government has made. The enhanced visa system adds another feather to his administration’s cap as it seeks to lead by example in building a more integrated and economically robust Africa.
