Masvingo, Zimbabwe – In a groundbreaking moment for Zimbabwe’s renewable energy future, the Great Zimbabwe Hydro Power Plant has officially commenced operations. The 5 MW hydroelectric facility is located at the iconic Lake Mutirikwi in Masvingo Province, which is set to transform the local energy landscape while making a significant contribution to the national grid.
For the communities in and around Masvingo, the opening of this power plant is more than just an infrastructure project as it represents progress, sustainability, and the promise of a brighter future. Utilizing the natural hydro power potential of the Mutirikwi River, the plant operates as a “run-of-river” system, seamlessly blending modern technology with the timeless flow of nature.
“We are happy to benefit from the power of collaboration,” said an elated community member. “Not only does it boost our energy supply, but it shows how we can harness our resources responsibly to benefit everyone.”
The realization of the Great Zimbabwe Hydro Power Plant was made possible through the cooperation of international and local investors. Frontier Energy, a Danish investment fund, joined forces with Zimbabwean entities, including Old Mutual Life Assurance Company, the Public Service Pension Fund, ZB Financial Holdings Pension Fund, and MOL Power.
Old Mutual Investment Group’s Alternative Investments Boutique played a crucial role in structuring local funding for the project. A spokesperson noted, “Old Mutual is committed to enabling positive futures, and this project embodies that vision by delivering both sustainable energy and long-term economic benefits.”
Built adjacent to the existing Lake Mutirikwi dam, managed by the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), the plant integrates seamlessly into the country’s water infrastructure. The project stands as the first of its kind in Zimbabwe to leverage this synergy, symbolizing innovation and resource optimization.
With its 5 MW capacity, the hydroelectric plant will connect directly to Zimbabwe’s national grid, providing much-needed electricity to address the nation’s growing demand. For families and businesses across the country, this development means fewer power outages and a step closer to energy security.
For the people of Masvingo, the project is more than an energy initiative, it’s a source of pride. Local workers contributed to the construction phase, and nearby communities are expected to benefit from improved infrastructure and increased economic activity.
