Gogo Dorcas Muranda started her music careers in her seventies and she has not shown signs of slowing down. My Afrika Magazine was pleased to engage Dorcas Muranda last year where she shared her success thus far as a singer including her debut album ‘Dombo NdiJesu’ in 2021, her chart topping hit ‘Ngatizozorora Tasvika’ with Agatha Murudzwa and various invites to minister and perform her music across the country. Her second album ‘Mhanya nenyaya dzako kuna Jesu’ is set for launch on the 30th of November in Mbare.

Now at 78 years of age, Muranda was enthusiastic and sprightly when she spoke about her career and the upcoming album. She had dreams of her music and began to record them on her cell phone. With the support of her children she recorded her album ‘Dombo NdiJesu’ which was launched virtually because of the COVID induced restrictions at the time. “The response [to the album] was very good and encouraging. People were participating and sending congratulations words and gifts,” she shared.

Her biggest performing release thus far has been ‘Ngatizozorora Tasvika’ which she worked on with Agatha Murudzwa. “I was very happy because this song made me popular on radio stations and many people.” The single enjoyed a successful run on Zimbabwe’s most popular gospel chart show, Zimpapers Gospel Greats hosted by Yvonne Tivatye. She has also shown herself to be an artist of great social awareness. In 2024 she released a song titled ‘Vanunureyi’ a heartfelt song which speaks of the youth who are victims of drug and substance abuse. When we spoke to her back in 2024 she expressed how recording and song writing was a challenge for her. “These days nervousness is gone thanks to the producers who are generous with me, expect a few.”

On the topic of her second album she shared how she had made her songs shorter and quicker to deliver her message; reflecting her growth and precision as an artist. The project did not come easily, she had financial barriers which slowed down production of the album. She has already began sending teasers to her fans to tickle their interest in her music.

She is enthusiastic that the event will be well attended. Muranda continues to encourage young singers to pursue their passion despite their age and circumstances. Her passions remain her desire to release as much music as she can before she leaves the earth.
