The Norton Town Awards (NOTAS) have become the highlight of the year, celebrating the exceptional contributions of individuals and organizations in the town. Held on December 6, 2024, this year’s NOTAS brought the community together in a dazzling display of elegance and camaraderie. With a red carpet and five-star setup, Norton proved it is not just a dormitory town but a host of gold-standard events. Among the dignitaries were former Norton MP Temba Mliswa, Mrs. Daisy Mtukudzi, and Shama Nyamadzavo, an African Women Wealth Builders Award winner.

One of the night’s highlights was Washington Madzima, a beloved figure in Norton known for his warm greetings and inclusive nature. Regardless of one’s background, financial status, or religious affiliation, Washington treats everyone with respect. Laughter and joy surround him, and for those who drink, they say the beer does not taste the same if Washington is not around. Many describe him as immune to being upset, always maintaining a cheerful demeanor. His ability to connect with everyone earned him the coveted Socialite of the Year award. Some who know him attribute this award to his mother, also a people person, who escorted him on stage to receive his award.

The awards covered a range of categories, including Social Impact, Business, Sports, Visual and Performing Arts, and Academics. They honored vendors, community heroes, environmental stewards, and volunteers who made significant contributions to Norton. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and celebration as winners were announced and applauded. Among the winners was singer Chipo Muchegwa, who received the prestigious Zebra Paints Phoenix Award.

This year’s awards were not just about the most prominent figures; they also recognized the quiet yet impactful individuals in the community. Honorees included Sister Chiedza, Tracy O’Connor, Tapiwa Chigwende, and Tatenda Ndove. SILO Outstanding Community Awards went to the Bhande couple and Tinashe Machemedze, a ward councilor and entrepreneur known for his philanthropic efforts, including donating wheelchairs, food hampers, and hosting Christmas parties. The late Mr. Beza was also honored for his remarkable contributions to Norton Heritage.

The MWOS Football Team, affiliated with the leading cross-border bus company Tamuka Coaches, was awarded WIGTAP Sports Team of the Year, while entrepreneurs and business leaders like Simba Nyagumbo, James Rikonda, and Tichakunda Mucheki were celebrated. Resim Mall Twinlakes, a new upscale shopping complex in the affluent suburbs of Twinlakes Park, Norton, received the Best Infrastructure and Development Award. Marchwood Senior School and Crown College were recognized for their outstanding school infrastructure, with Dudley Hall Primary winning the Best Primary School Award. Tsungirirai, a non-governmental organization based in Norton, was awarded the Ramangwana Social Impact Award.

Invited guests, ticket holders, and friends and family of the winners joined the celebrations, making it a memorable evening. The NOTAS awards have become a symbol of hope and unity, encouraging residents to strive for excellence. The event not only acknowledges achievements but also fosters community engagement and collaboration, inspiring everyone to work towards a better future for Norton. With the 2024 event being a resounding success, the NOTAS awards continue to be a significant part of the Norton community, celebrating the achievements and contributions of its members.
