ATLANTA – Tributes have poured in from across the globe following the passing of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a towering figure in global leadership, humanitarian efforts, and public service. He died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100, the longest-lived president in U.S. history.

President Carter is survived by his children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalynn, and one grandchild.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

President Joseph R. Biden Jr. led the tributes, calling Carter an “extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian.” In a heartfelt statement, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden highlighted Carter’s six decades of service to America and the world, praising his compassion, moral clarity, and unwavering commitment to civil rights, peace, and humanity. “He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe,” Biden remarked, announcing plans for an official state funeral in Washington, D.C., to honor Carter’s legacy.

Former President Barack Obama described Carter as a man who exemplified “grace, dignity, justice, and service,” while extending prayers to the Carter family and all who had been inspired by his life.

Donald J. Trump, the 45th President of the United States, also expressed his condolences, acknowledging Carter’s contributions during a challenging era in U.S. history. “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump stated, urging prayers for the Carter family.

International leaders, including Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto, joined in mourning Carter’s passing. “President Jimmy Carter was an extraordinary leader whose dedication to public service was epic,” Ruto stated, emphasizing Carter’s contributions to global peace, human rights, and environmental sustainability.

Carter, who served as President from 1977 to 1981, was widely respected not only for his political leadership but also for his post-presidency humanitarian work. Through the Carter Center, he spearheaded initiatives to eradicate disease, monitor elections, and promote global health and human rights.

Born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924, Carter’s life was marked by his humble beginnings, military service, and lifelong commitment to his faith and values. His presidency, though faced with significant challenges, reflected his steadfast dedication to fostering peace and equality.

In the words of President Biden, “To anyone in search of what it means to live a life of purpose and meaning – the good life – study Jimmy Carter, a man of principle, faith, and humility.”

As the world mourns this loss, Jimmy Carter’s legacy as a leader, humanitarian, and champion for justice will remain a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
