Meet Jay Bhikha, a vibrant content creator and media personality who’s taking Zimbabwe by storm.
With a passion for storytelling through his camera lens and a love for food, Jay’s social media presence is a breath of fresh air. From showcasing the value of a US dollar in Zimbabwe to creating hilarious skits, he’s built a loyal following.
My Afrika Magazine reporter, Tapiwa Rubaya (TR), caught up with Jay (JB) to dive into his creative process, inspirations, and how he’s navigating the ever-changing digital landscape, including the rise of AI.
TR: Jay, can you introduce yourself to My Afrika Magazine readers?
JB: Hi there, my name is Jay Bhikha, a content creator and media personality. I am a very outgoing person and a foodie, hence the content you see on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. My passion is social media and telling stories with a camera.
TR: What’s your creative process like?
JB: I normally get the ideas then and there as soon as I enter the room.
TR: How do you come up with ideas for your content?
JB: I understand what the client wants and will produce that on video with a bit of spice.
TR: What’s been your most popular piece of content, and what made it resonate with your audience?
JB: That would be the video where I showed what 1US dollar can buy in Zimbabwe, and it got over 2million views. I guess why it resonates with my audience is because we want to know what things we can buy in Zim and if it’s a fan favourite.
TR: How do you balance creativity with the pressure to constantly produce?
JB: I have no formula for being consistent. I do have days where I won’t post for weeks, then days where I post every day, it’s just how I roll, and I don’t mind that. You don’t have to beat yourself about it, either.
TR: What inspires you, and who do you draw inspiration from?
JB: My inspiration comes from the guys from America who do vines and skits, for example, Adam Waheed.
TR: How has the evolving internet landscape, particularly the rise of AI, impacted your work as a content creator?
JB: AI has helped with its fair share when it comes to helping me with a content plan for the month or simply helping find new books to read.
TR: Do you see AI as a tool or a challenge in your creative process?
JB: Definitely a tool.
TR: What’s next for you? Any exciting projects on the horizon?
JB: Stay tuned, watch the space!
TR: How do you engage with your audience, and what do you love most about interacting with them?
JB: The fact that people learn something from me is all I need to know
TR: What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a content creator, and how did you overcome it?
JB: Biggest challenge is collaborating with other creators, most guys out there don’t have the passion for it and are just in it for the money, which honestly makes me so sad to think that you do what you do for money only.
TR: What advice would you give to someone just starting in content creation, especially in this AI-driven era?
JB: Use it, don’t abuse it, meaning take small amounts, not over-ally using Ai to create your content for you, don’t forget to pray about your content, because you want to be an influencer and Jesus was the greatest influencer to me!
TR: How do you stay authentic and unique in a space where AI-generated content is becoming more prevalent?
JB: Don’t forget why your followers started following you.
TR: Are there any collaborations or partnerships you’re looking forward to?
JB: Yes, I’m wishing to collaborate with Airlines in the near future.
