
Brussels, A highly anticipated meeting of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council is set for Monday the 24th of February 2025. This significant gathering will be presided over by Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.
The agenda for the February Foreign Affairs Council meeting will cover several pressing global issues. One of the primary topics of discussion will be the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine, as the EU marks the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. EU Foreign Affairs Ministers will engage in a detailed dialogue on the situation, following an informal exchange of views with the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, who will join via videoconference.
Additionally, the council will address recent developments in the Middle East, with a specific focus on Syria, Lebanon, and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The council aims to refine the EU’s position on these critical issues and discuss humanitarian support for Palestinians.
The continued escalation of conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo will also be on the agenda, as ministers exchange views on its impact on the country and the wider region. Over a working lunch, the council will delve into the current situation in Iran. This discussion will encompass various aspects, including potential sanctions and the broader geopolitical implications.
The Foreign Affairs Council will also address recent events and fast-moving developments in security and defense, ensuring that the EU remains responsive and proactive in its foreign policy. On the eve of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Kaja Kallas will host a dinner with Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, and Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process ad interim and Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza. Sigrid Kaag will participate via videoconference.
The Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 24 February 2025 will be followed by the EU-Israel Association Council and will serve as a critical platform for addressing key international issues and shaping the EU’s foreign policy stance in these turbulent times.
