Indeed, there is a Men’s Day, and hopefully, all the wonderful men who make a positive impact in the lives of others were recognized yesterday, November 19, the official date of International Men’s Day 2024, acknowledged by the United Nations. This date was established in 1999 by the International Men’s Committee to highlight the positive roles men play in society and to promote gender equality.
This year’s observance emphasized actions such as encouraging healthier lifestyles, improving access to healthcare, and fostering supportive environments where men can thrive.
According to the World Health Organization, men are at higher risk for various health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders. Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to advocate for healthy lifestyle choices and mental well-being.
Additionally, many men face challenges such as parental alienation, abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence. As we approach the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), let us empower men to prioritize their health and become active allies in the fight against GBV.
Ending GBV is not just a women’s issue, it is a human issue, and everyone has a role to play. We often see Women’s Day arrive with hashtags, campaigns, and events, while Men’s Day quietly slips by, sometimes unnoticed. Yet, Men’s Day holds equal significance because it acknowledges the immense contributions men make to society, families, and workplaces.
At the same time, men face societal pressures to “man up” and meet expectations, often without spaces where they can openly discuss their struggles without judgment, spaces that women may access more readily. Please note that this is not about comparison; it is about promoting equity in appreciation.
Let us keep the momentum of recognition alive and foster a culture where everyone can thrive together.
