After nearly three decades, the much-loved Neil Diamond Masterworks show returns to Harare’s Reps Theatre for one special night. Singer-songwriter David Scobie, best known for his 1979 hit Gypsy Girl, will take to the stage on Friday, 29 August at 7:00pm in a one-night-only performance that promises nostalgia, storytelling, and timeless music.

The return marks a significant moment in Zimbabwe’s cultural calendar. First staged at Reps Theatre 27 years ago, Neil Diamond Masterworks was initially billed for a two-week run but quickly extended to four due to overwhelming demand, selling out every night. The production’s success saw it move outdoors, with two additional performances at Highlands School attracting a combined audience of 7,000, before embarking on a countrywide tour.

This 2025 edition brings the show full circle. Scobie will revisit Neil Diamond’s most iconic songs, blending his own powerful vocals and signature storytelling style with the music that influenced his career. “It’s more than a concert,” organisers said. “It’s a homecoming.”

Born in Dundee, Scotland in 1964, Scobie moved to Rhodesia in 1973 and became a household name across Zimbabwe in the late 1970s. His breakout single Gypsy Girl topped local charts and reached No. 4 in South Africa, where it spent 19 weeks on the Springbok Top 20. Known for blending traditional Scottish and African folk with global pop influences, Scobie carved out a unique voice in the region’s music scene. Now based in Portugal, his return is expected to resonate strongly with audiences who grew up with his music.

Reps Theatre, home to The Repertory Players since 1931, provides the perfect stage for the revival. With nearly a century of productions and over 800 plays and musicals to its name, the Belgravia-based theatre remains a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s cultural life.

Tickets for the performance are expected to sell quickly, given the show’s enduring legacy and Scobie’s long-standing connection with Zimbabwean audiences.
