Art 84 Gallery on Pendennis Road in Mt Pleasant opened its doors on 12 December 2025 for a special exhibition titled “Roots and Horizons.”
The show brought together eight emerging Zimbabwean artists; Courtney Chots, Florah Maphosa, Willard Magiga, Brain Momba, Willard Mujuru, Roselyn Marikasi, Tonderai Mujuru and Keith Zenda showcasing their work together for the first time.
Curated by Tonderai Mujuru and Keith Zenda, the exhibition reflected both Zimbabwe’s deep cultural roots and the contemporary ideas shaping its new generation of artists.
“Roots and Horizons” also marked the launch of Art Gallery Zimbabwe, an initiative partnering with Artgal online, founded by Swiss-based entrepreneur Dennis Zenda, who runs the Zenda Art Center and Gallery in Gweru and the Art Gallery Zimbabwe Center in Domboshava, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, noting that international sales already show how far Zimbabwean art can travel and how small community-based projects can have a global impact.
The artworks on display reflected a rich blend of personal stories and Zimbabwean culture. Courtney Chots used vibrant colours to portray lively urban scenes, while Florah Maphosa explored identity through layered mixed-media compositions.
Willard Magiga drew inspiration from Zimbabwe’s landscapes, using abstract forms and bold hues. Brain Momba focused on expressive human faces that capture everyday dignity, while Willard Mujuru’s sculptures, made from reclaimed materials, highlight themes of resilience and sustainability. Roselyn Marikasi weaved traditional patterns into modern designs, reflecting the dynamic interplay of heritage and contemporary expression. Tonderai Mujuru’s environmental installations use natural elements to create immersive spaces, and Keith Zenda’s paintings combine realism with symbolism to invite deeper emotional interpretation.
Visitors had the opportunity to walk through the gallery, engage with the artists and listen to short talks from the curators. Soft music complemented the evening, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
“Roots and Horizons” became a celebration of Zimbabwe’s artistic talent and a significant step forward for the country’s place on the global art stage.
