There was extreme jubilation in Bulawayo’s Ward 22 as residents celebrated after learning that their councillor, Bruce Mmeli Moyo, had been granted bail of $100 USD by the High Court in Bulawayo.

Councillor Moyo, who was arrested on August 1st for incitement to commit public violence, had been in custody until August 29th and is remanded until September 27th. His arrest occurred alongside that of other political activists across the country, some of whom were detained for similar charges.

Several politicians, including former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Members of Parliament and councillors like Ostallos Siziba, Shepherd Sithole, Pashor Sibanda, and current Hwange MP Daniel Molokele, showed solidarity with Moyo, claiming he was a political prisoner.

In an exclusive interview with one of Moyo’s close family members, they revealed that last week, family and friends visited him at Khami Prison but were not allowed to see him. After hearing the news of his release, the source, who declined to be named, expressed relief that Moyo could finally reunite with his family, stating it was his right.

A visit to Ward 22 by My Afrika Magazine revealed that some residents were optimistic that Moyo’s return would expedite ongoing community projects. “We were shocked at his arrest because we have a number of projects that we are already working with him. His absence has taken us backwards. However, we will work again and rebuild our ward with him,” said one resident.

Councillor Moyo, known for his sharp dressing and popularity among Bulawayo’s youth, was elected in 2022 under the Citizens Coalition for Change led by Advocate Nelson Chamisa. He was among the councillors recalled by CCC’s interim Secretary General, Sengezo Tshabangu, but made a comeback as he was re-elected by Ward 22 residents during the by-elections.
