Harare, 24 June 2024 – “The Cinema Society of Zimbabwe proudly announces the launch of the Academy of Motion Pictures (AMP), a new entity dedicated to supporting and empowering the Zimbabwean film and television industry. This strategic initiative is designed to provide filmmakers with a stronger voice and greater influence in shaping the Zimbabwe Annual Film and Television Awards (ZAFTAs), the premier awards ceremony recognizing excellence in the industry.“

“The establishment of the Academy of Motion Pictures marks a significant step forward for the Zimbabwean film and television industry,” said Richard Tentone, Founder of the Cinema Society of Zimbabwe. “By creating a dedicated body to oversee the ZAFTAs, we are empowering filmmakers to have a greater say in the direction and growth of their industry.”

The AMP will serve as the supreme decision-making board for the ZAFTAs, separating this critical role from the broader responsibilities of the Cinema Society of Zimbabwe. This move aims to foster a more collaborative and inclusive environment for growth and development within the industry.

To participate in the organization and influence of the ZAFTAs, filmmakers are required to become members of the AMP. The annual subscription fee is set at $10 USD, making membership accessible to a wide range of industry professionals. However, to ensure impartiality and fairness in the judging process, Academy members will not be eligible to participate in the selection of nominees or judging.

Experienced filmmakers, academics, media players, distributors, broadcasters, and other industry stakeholders are encouraged to join the AMP. This inclusive approach aims to create a diverse and representative body that can effectively advocate for the needs and aspirations of the Zimbabwean film and television community.
