Zimbabwean songstress Chengeto Brown has paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Chiwoniso Maraire, in her latest release, “Wandirasa.” The song, which dropped a few days ago, was accompanied by a lush music video conceptualized by Chengeto herself. A video release party in Harare marked the occasion, celebrating both the new release and the legacy of Chiwoniso Maraire.
The single features DJ Naida and brings a modern twist to Maraire’s iconic 1998 song from her album “Ancient Voices,” infusing it with dance and EDM elements. The release is particularly poignant as 2024 marks the eleventh anniversary of Maraire’s passing on July 24, 2013. Chiwoniso Maraire is revered as a custodian of Zimbabwean music and culture, affectionately known as the “Queen of Mbira.” Chengeto’s homage not only honors her mother but also introduces Maraire’s music to a younger audience.
Chengeto, daughter of legendary Zimbabwean musician Andy Brown, has followed in her parents’ musical footsteps. Her career includes notable collaborations, such as the duet “Wachu Want” with her sister Ammara Brown, and a nomination for the 2023 Star FM Music Award in the “Best House/Amapiano” category for her single “Love You More.” She also featured in “Tryna” with the rap group A Piece of Ebony, a group her mother was part of in the 1990s. Chengeto’s undeniable talent and her ability to evoke deep emotions through her music continue to captivate audiences.
