Accra, Ghana — The Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF) is turning ten, and with it comes a celebration not just of a festival, but of a movement that has redefined the role of African cinema on the world stage. Since its inception in 2015, BSIFF has weathered every storm, fueled by the vision of creatives, the dedication of volunteers, and the guidance of strong board advisors, to remain one of the most dynamic and impactful film festivals on the continent.
From September 24th to 28th, 2025, Accra will once again light up with screenings, masterclasses, and cultural events under the theme “The Relevance of Film in Society.” This milestone edition promises to be more than just a festival, it is a statement of endurance, growth, and the power of storytelling.
Over the past ten years, BSIFF has done more than screen films. It has brought the world to Ghana and Ghana to the world. From fostering industry exchanges to breaking down language barriers in African cinema, the festival has consistently championed African narratives and highlighted the global value of film.
One of the festival’s landmark achievements came with the recent partnership between BSIFF and Majesty Cinemas in Ivory Coast, designed to bridge English- and French-speaking markets. This initiative is more than a distribution pipeline, it is a cultural bridge, rewriting the legacy of colonial divides by connecting African filmmakers and audiences across linguistic lines. “With this partnership, we’re creating a new model of collaboration, one that respects local identities while strengthening pan-African unity through cinema,” said Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, Founder of BSIFF.
Film is one of Africa’s fastest-growing industries, and according to UNESCO, the largest employer in the creative economy. Through its masterclasses, panels, and immersive industry programs, BSIFF has inspired thousands of young creatives to see themselves not just as actors or directors, but as part of a vast ecosystem of opportunity. From costume designers and cinematographers to entertainment lawyers and producers, the festival has exposed audiences to the many roles that bring stories to life.
By providing these platforms, BSIFF has nurtured homegrown talent while connecting them with international professionals, creating a pipeline of opportunities that stretch across Africa and beyond.
At its heart, BSIFF has always been about more than film, it is about stories, culture, and people. Each edition has blended serious industry engagement with vibrant social experiences, from red carpet premieres and party nights to the highly anticipated awards ceremony. Exclusive premieres and never-before-seen films have graced its screens, drawing audiences from across the globe to Accra’s cinemas.

The 10th anniversary promises to deliver all of this and more. Attendees can expect a rich lineup of films, inspiring interactions with filmmakers, and moments of pure celebration of African creativity and resilience.
Reflecting on a decade of progress, one truth stands out: BSIFF has become a cornerstone of Africa’s cultural landscape. It has stood the test of time by staying true to its mission of amplifying African voices while inviting the world to listen, learn, and collaborate.
As the festival celebrates this milestone, it does so not just with pride in its past, but with excitement for the future. “Congratulations to all the hardworking filmmakers selected for the Black Star International Film Festival,” reads a message from the organizers. “Your dedication and vision have shone through an extremely tight competition this year. We can’t wait to celebrate your achievements and share your stories with the world.”
Ten years in, BSIFF is more than a festival. It is a beacon. A bridge. A promise that Africa’s stories will continue to shine brighter and reach further.
