The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the United Nations’ new Roadmap for Libya, unveiled before the UN Security Council on August 21, 2025, by Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The Roadmap seeks to end Libya’s long-standing crisis through a comprehensive political process that emphasizes the unification of national institutions, the organization of democratic elections, and the launch of an inclusive and structured dialogue.

In a statement, the AUC Chairperson urged all Libyan stakeholders to fully and sincerely engage in national dialogue and reconciliation, underscoring the need for a collective commitment to peaceful resolution of the conflict.

He further highlighted the importance of strong coordination between regional, continental, and international actors to ensure effective political support for the implementation of the Roadmap.

Reaffirming the AU’s steadfast commitment, Youssouf pledged the Union’s continued support to accompany Libyans in their pursuit of “silencing the guns,” restoring peace, and resuming constructive dialogue. He also commended the tireless work of the AU High Level Committee on Libya, chaired by H.E. Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of Congo, for its ongoing contributions.
