African designers made a bold statement at Shanghai Fashion Week, bridging the gap between Africa and one of the world’s fastest-growing fashion capitals.

From March 25 to 29, Shanghai hosted top global designers, with African talent taking center stage. Among them were South African icons Rich Mnisi, David Tlale, Mzukisi Mbane of Imprint ZA, Palesa Mokubung of Mantsho, and Jessica Jane Moleatsi, alongside a Zambian designer and 20 African fashion brands under the Africa Reimagined Showroom. Curated by Development Reimagined, an award-winning African-led consultancy, the showroom showcased the vibrancy, craftsmanship, and innovation of contemporary African design.

Shanghai Fashion Week has become a key platform for buyers, trendsetters, and luxury industry leaders, offering African designers the chance to expand their global influence.

On the sidelines of the event, Development Reimagined CEO Hannah Ryder moderated a panel discussion featuring African designers. The session, attended by South African Consul General to Shanghai, Joyce Tsipa, focused on African storytelling through prints and sustainable fashion.

“African designers are on another level—we must do more to support them,” said Tsipa. “Failing them means failing our heritage and future generations of fashion creatives.”

This groundbreaking presence at Shanghai Fashion Week highlights the growing global recognition of African fashion and its powerful cultural narratives. (Source: Facebook)
