Zimbabwe joined the World yesterday in commemorating, World Environment Day which is a global platform for inspiring positive change, encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
The event was commemorated at Glamis Arena in Harare. In attendance were UNICEF Representative Dr Tajudeen Oyewale, UN Agencies, Director Environment and Natural Resources Mr Edward Samuriwo, Director Environmental Services Mr Steady Kangata, Director Scientific Research Zimparks Professor Edson Gandiwa, Acting Director General Forestry Commission Ms Violet Makoto, representatives from ZTA, school children, key stakeholders, and other invited guests.
The purpose of the commemorations was to highlight to the nation the importance of the environment to human well-being.
This day was designated based on the recognition of the numerous environmental challenges confronting the world and in particular the African continent.
This year’s theme was “Solutions to Plastic Pollution”. The theme highlights a key global problem that affects everyone, both marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
The Secretary for Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Ambassador Raphael Tayerera Faranisi said,that there is an urgent need globally and locally to address the threat of plastic pollution.
The Secretary also applauded all Development Partners, Government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other stakeholders for sterling efforts towards environmental protection.
