“We Stand With You,” says Kagame as Rwanda Marks 32 Years Since Genocide Against the Tutsi.

Rwanda has begun commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, with President Paul Kagame urging the nation to preserve historical truth and confront genocide denial.

In a message shared on social media, Kagame stressed the importance of remembrance as the country enters a 100-day mourning period honouring more than one million lives lost during the genocide.

At the Kigali Genocide Memorial, President Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame laid wreaths alongside members of the diplomatic corps in tribute to the victims. Kagame later lit the Flame of Remembrance and addressed the nation in Kigali, reaffirming Rwanda’s unity and collective resolve never to forget.

“To all survivors, know that you are not alone. We stand with you always,” he said.

Reflecting on Rwanda’s journey of recovery and renewal, Kagame praised the resilience of its people while warning that indifference and denial risk allowing history to repeat itself.

Held under the theme “Remember, Unite, and Renew,” this year’s commemoration brings together government leaders, diplomats and families of victims. National flags across Rwanda remain at half-mast throughout the mourning week in honour of those lost.
