The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has intensified humanitarian and rescue operations in Mozambique following severe flooding that has devastated parts of the country’s southern and central regions.
Operating under Operation CHARIOT, the SANDF has deployed specialised personnel and air assets to support emergency relief efforts, underscoring South Africa’s commitment to regional solidarity during times of crisis. The floods have displaced thousands of families and caused widespread damage to infrastructure, leaving many communities isolated and in urgent need of assistance.
To date, South African Air Force (SAAF) aircrews have rescued 479 people from flood-affected areas, transporting them to places of safety. The operation is being supported by one Oryx helicopter and two Agusta 109 light utility helicopters, which have proven critical in accessing hard-to-reach locations and carrying out rapid evacuations.
The SANDF is working closely with Mozambican authorities, disaster management agencies and emergency rescue teams to evacuate those at risk and deliver humanitarian support to affected communities.
