Zimbabwe’s swimmers delivered an impressive performance at the 4th African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, returning home with one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Alexis Johnsen led the charge with a standout display in the 50m Freestyle, winning gold and breaking the national record with a time of 27.00 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 27.25. The achievement underlined her consistency, discipline and growing stature on the continental stage.
The Boys’ 4x100m Medley Relay team—Jwes Jared, Nathan Chibva, Sibusiso Fayayo and Kwandokuhle Nkomazana—secured a bronze medal, while the Girls’ 4x100m Freestyle Relay team of Neema Bhulabhai, Kristin Jones, Ruvarashe Choto and Alexis Johnsen claimed silver.
Johnsen added two more bronze medals to her tally in the 200m Freestyle (2:12.26) and 100m Freestyle (59.65), capping off an outstanding campaign.
Elsewhere, Paige Van Der Westhuizen continued Zimbabwe’s strong swimming form by breaking multiple National Short Course Records at the Scottish National Short Course Championships, including the 50m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke.
The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee has congratulated the swimmers on their achievements as the athletes set their sights on upcoming competitions on the Road to LA28.
