Gaborone, November 6, 2025 — Botswana has entered a landmark multi-billion dollar strategic partnership with global investors to secure the country’s long-term energy future and end its dependence on electricity imports.
Signed by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, the agreement brings together Thirty-Five Global Links (TFGL), Mercuria Asia Holdings, Ulsan Holding, and Innovation Global Industries (IGI) to rehabilitate Morupule A and B Power Stations, develop new power projects, and expand transmission infrastructure.
Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, said the deal marks a major milestone in Botswana’s journey toward sustainable and reliable energy supply. “This partnership will ensure that Botswana achieves electricity for all by 2030, balancing coal and renewables while positioning the country as a future power exporter,” she said.
President Duma Gideon Boko described the partnership as a bold step toward self-sufficiency. “We are a net importer of electricity, and this must change,” he stated. “With this deal, Morupule A and B will be upgraded to deliver up to 600 megawatts of power, saving billions spent on imports and lighting up our industries and homes.”
The consortium’s investment, among the largest in Botswana’s history, will also focus on renewable integration, technology transfer, and job creation, signaling a new era of energy-driven industrial growth.
“This is how Botswana shines, not only through diamonds, but through the power that fuels its future,” Kenewendo said.
