The multi-award-winning documentary Soundtrack to a Coup D’état captivated audiences at the EU Film Festival Zimbabwe, hosted in Harare and Bulawayo in partnership with the European Union.
Screened at Amakhosi Cultural Centre on June 8, the Johan Grimonprez-directed film revisits the 1961 protest by jazz icons Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach at the UN following the assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba.
Narrated by In Koli Jean Bofane and Zap Mama, the film explores the intersection of jazz, protest, and decolonization.
After the screening, viewers praised the documentary’s emotional depth and called for more efforts to confront Africa’s hidden histories as a step toward healing and forgiveness.
