Tensions between France and West African nations, including Senegal and Chad, have escalated following French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks accusing African countries of being ungrateful for France’s assistance in combating jihadist insurgencies.

Chad’s Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah condemned Macron’s comments, urging French leaders to respect African sacrifices. Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko criticized France’s role in destabilizing the region, citing Libya as an example with dire security consequences.

The controversy underscores long-standing grievances over France’s lingering influence in its former colonies, including economic control through the CFA franc and criticism of its ineffective military operations like Operation Barkhane in the Sahel.

Amid growing dissatisfaction, nations such as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have terminated security agreements with France, expelled troops, and pivoted toward alternative partnerships, including Russia. The shift signals Africa’s drive to assert independence and end neocolonial ties, marking the decline of France’s traditional dominance in the region.
