AgriSETA, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, is set to host the Agri-Edu Symposium under the theme “Transforming Agricultural Education for a Sustainable Future” on December 10 at Unisa’s Main Campus, Pretoria. The event aims to address pressing challenges within South Africa’s agricultural education system by aligning curricula with modern industry demands, fostering innovation, and preparing the next generation of agricultural professionals for a resilient and sustainable future.
Key discussions will focus on curriculum reform, bridging the skills gap, and integrating climate-smart and sustainable farming practices into education. Industry leaders, policymakers, and educators will collaborate on actionable strategies to equip students with job-ready skills while emphasizing sustainability and innovation.
Speaking on the initiative, AgriSETA Board Chairperson Ms. Gaitsiwe Sharon Sepeng said, “We must overhaul our educational framework to reflect technological advancements, climate adaptation, and industry needs, ensuring job creation and food security.“
The symposium will bring together experts and stakeholders from academia, government, and industry to address challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and limited accessibility to training. AgriSETA CEO Dr. Innocent Sirovha highlighted the importance of climate-resilient farming education, noting, “Equipping farmers with adaptive tools is essential for South Africa’s agricultural value chain to thrive amid extreme weather conditions.” The event underscores the critical role of education in securing a sustainable agricultural future for the nation.
