From dressing A-listers in the arts and entertainment industry to outfitting roora squads, George Takora’s designs are now being worn by pageant kings. George Takora is taking the media and fashion world by storm. Known as the “Child of Africa,” he is the creative genius behind George Takora Designs, which he describes as a brand that designs “for both a reason and a season.”

My Afrika Magazine reporter Tapiwanashe Rubaya speaks with George about his creative process, his influences, and some of the challenges he has faced as an African designer establishing his foothold on the continent. Find out why George is proudly proclaiming, “I have made it!

TR: How has growing up in Mufakose influenced your desire to be a fashion designer?
GT: I grew up in the “jungle” of Mufakose, one of Zimbabwe’s most popular high-density suburbs. It is a place full of challenges, like lions, vultures, and predators. I consider myself a survivor, and that is a skill you have to master when you come from where I come from.

TR: What makes your brand stand out in the fashion industry?
GT: Aesthetics. My brand has a story behind it and still has a long journey ahead. I do not follow trends; I create my own for my own clients.

TR: When you first entered the world of fashion design, what was your mission statement?
GT: “George Takora is here to create for all reasons and all seasons.”

TR: How did you come up with the idea of building your own fashion brand?
GT: To be honest, I did not plan to build a brand; it happened subconsciously. I believe it was my destiny.

TR: Your mother was a fashion designer. What advice did she give you that has helped refine your work?
GT: She has been incredibly supportive from the start. I owe it to her for where I am today.

TR: You have dressed award-winning artists like Feli Nandi, Plot Mhako, and Hope Masike.
GT: It is an honor to work with big names. I am learning a lot from them, and they have been very supportive.

TR: Designers often face challenges working with roora squads. How do you build positive relationships with them?
GT: If you gather all the necessary details from clients, it reduces the challenges. I have learned that patience is essential, especially when working with groups.

TR: You are among the designers dressing Mister Africa International Zimbabwe 2024. What does this collaboration mean to you?
GT: It means I can shout, “Momma, I made it!” It is my first international collaboration, and I am honored to be chosen from a pool of talented designers.

TR: What advice would you give someone planning to enter the fashion industry?
GT: Fashion becomes a way of life. Be prepared to be called “weird,” and never quit.
