She became president on March 19, 2021, following the sudden death of her predecessor, John Magufuli. Prior to her presidency, Suluhu served as the Vice President of Tanzania from 2015 to 2021, also becoming the first woman to hold that role.

Tanzania rail system is one of the best in East Africa. The history of the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) dates back to 1948, with the establishment of the East African Railways and Harbours Corporation (EAR&H). This organization was formed to serve the then East African High Commission, uniting the Kenya and Uganda Railways and Harbours with the Tanganyika Railway from the Tanganyika Territory. EAR&H operated railways and harbors across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika (now Tanzania), as well as inland shipping services on major water bodies like Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, and the Victoria Nile.
