Presenting her brand, Chardesignz, at one of the most prestigious platforms, the Zim Afro T10, Charmaine Ropafadzo Nziradzemhuka (CN) speaks exclusively to My Afrika Magazine. In this conversation with our journalist, Tapiwanashe Rubaya (TR), Charmaine sheds light on the inspiration behind her “Glory” collection, presented at the Zim Afro T10, as well as the reasons for founding her brand. She also discusses Chardesignz’s collaborations with international brands and her vision for African fashion.

TR: Who is the visionary behind Chardesignz?
CN: I, Charmaine Ropafadzo Nziradzemhuka, am the founder of Chardesignz.

TR: What inspired you to create the brand?
CN: My main inspiration was to build generational wealth for my children’s children, and to see an African brand flourish on the continent while also making a global impact. I aim for Chardesignz to stand among prestigious heritage brands, next to the big fashion houses. We need to see more African brands rise to that level.

TR: How would you define fashion?
CN: Fashion is an art form, a craft, and a medium for storytelling. Today, more than ever, it’s also about buying less and preserving the environment from the harms of fast fashion. People have consumed too many clothes, and it’s time we focus on sustainability.

TR: What makes Chardesignz unique?
CN: My uniqueness comes from my approach to the design process. I constantly push boundaries to create authentic, original designs. My creativity is rooted in experimentation and exploration. For my ready-to-wear collections, the fabrics I use are quite unique.

TR: Who is your ideal client?
CN: My clients are those who are daring, sophisticated, and confident enough to wear something bold and unique that we design.

TR: What are the main advantages of showcasing your brand at events like the Zim Afro T10?
CN: Showcasing at T10 provides significant exposure. It allows the brand to be seen by a wider audience, enhancing credibility and sparking curiosity among those unfamiliar with us. It’s also an excellent networking opportunity with other professionals, which is always exciting.

TR: Tell us about the collection you presented at Zim Afro T10 and its inspiration.
CN: The collection was inspired by ancient linen garments and the ephod and breastplate worn by priests during Moses’ time. I wanted to modernize those elements and make them contemporary, which is why I titled the collection “Glory.”

TR: We’ve heard you’re collaborating with Mister Africa International Zimbabwe 2024. Can you share more about that?
CN: Yes, it’s more of a partnership. The goal is to send a message that Zimbabweans can work together and support one another by wearing and promoting their local brands. It’s about unity and collaboration.

TR: What advice do you give your clients before designing for them?
CN: Timelines are crucial, especially for custom services. If it’s ready-made, we take them through the design samples available in-store to see what works best for them. We also have the option of discussing designs online and delivering the product.

TR: Thank you for your time. How can My Afrika Magazine readers reach out to you?
CN: They can connect with us on social media @chardesignzofficial and @charmainenzi, or visit our website at chardesignhouse.com.
