Tensions flared at the Zimbabwean Parliament as newly elected MPs took their oaths, particularly during the swearing-in of Hon. Scott Sakupwanya, the uncontested representative for Mabvuku-Tafara. Members of the main opposition party, Citizens Coalition of Change (CCC), expressed their disapproval through a silent protest, folding their arms as Hon. Sakupwanya took his oath. This display of dissent quickly escalated, as other CCC members erupted in chants and protests.

The scene prompted intervention from the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Advocate Mudenda. He called upon the Zimbabwe Police Service, who entered the chamber and escorted the protesting CCC members out. This intervention led to a temporary suspension of Parliament proceedings and a four-sitting suspension for the involved CCC members.

Viral video footage from New Zimbabwe media captures the dramatic scene outside the new Parliament building, where scuffles broke out between CCC MPs and Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers. In the heated exchange, CCC members can be heard questioning the legitimacy of Hon. Scott Sakupwanya’s election, shouting “Who elected him?”

Hon. Sakupwanya emerged uncontested as the representative for Mabvuku-Tafara after a High Court ruling barred CCC candidates from participating in the recent by-elections. This decision fueled tensions, leading to the protest and subsequent clash with police.

Nine new members of Parliament were sworn in during the ceremony, but only two represent the CCC under the leadership of Sengezo Tshabangu, who claims the title of Secretary General. This imbalanced outcome further amplifies the existing political divide within the country.
